Muon Colliders: a challenging opportunity
Abstract:
A multi-TeV muon collider is at the same time a perfect discovery machine and an invaluable tool for unprecedented precision measurements of Standard Model processes. The update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics (ESPPU) recognized the unique opportunity of a muon collider as a path toward the high-energy, high-luminosity frontier beyond the expected reach, despite the challenges to produce bright muon beams and mitigate the drawbacks arising from the short muon lifetime at rest.
The new international collaboration for a Design Study based at CERN is focusing on a 3 TeV and a 10+ TeV center of mass energy collider options to evaluate the feasibility of the facility by the next ESPPU. The physics potential, the need for a demonstrator and the required technology developments are the key issues also addressed by the European Accelerator and Detector R&D Roadmaps, and studied within the ongoing US Snowmass process.
The status of the project, future plans and synergies will be discussed.
